Short answer: the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) accredits universities and colleges in Ghana and publishes public warnings about institutions that are unaccredited, whose accreditation has expired, or whose certificates are not recognised. Before you pay fees or rely on a certificate, search the institution on TrustCheck's list of GTEC warnings and confirm its status with GTEC.
What has GTEC warned about in 2026?
- Unrecognised institutions (as at September 2026): foreign and local institutions whose certificates GTEC does not recognise because of quality assurance concerns.
- Unaccredited learning centres (notice of 8 July 2026): some learning centres and campuses of well-known public universities that have not been accredited.
- Expired accreditation (same notice): institutions whose institutional accreditation has expired.
- Unaccredited institutions: institutions operating without GTEC accreditation.
Every name on TrustCheck links to the GTEC notice it came from.
How do you check before paying fees?
- Search the exact institution and campus on TrustCheck's licence check. A famous university's name does not cover an unaccredited learning centre.
- Check the programme as well as the institution: ask for proof that the specific programme is accredited.
- Confirm with GTEC directly ([email protected]) if anything is unclear.
Why does it matter?
Certificates from unrecognised or unaccredited institutions may not be accepted by employers, for further study or for professional licences. You can lose your fees and years of study.
Which admission scams should parents and students watch for?
- "Protocol" admission offers that ask for money to secure a place. Read SHS protocol admission scams.
- Degrees "without classes" or certificates for a fee.
- Agents who ask for fees by MoMo to a personal number instead of the school's official account.
Before you pay an agent, check their number on TrustCheck.
Where these facts come from (checked 31 October 2026): GTEC: unrecognised institutions; GTEC: public notice of 8 July 2026; GTEC: unaccredited institutions.
