Short answer: yes, Mercor is a real company. It was founded in San Francisco in 2023 and hires experts on contract (doctors, lawyers, engineers, accountants, writers and more) to train and test AI models for AI companies. In October 2025 it raised $350 million at a $10 billion valuation. Mercor's own help pages list Ghana as a supported country, and Mercor says it never asks for any payment or fee. The real risks are fake "Mercor recruiters" and expecting a steady full-time salary from project work.
What is Mercor?
Mercor is a hiring marketplace for AI work. AI labs need people with real expertise to write questions, check answers, grade responses and spot mistakes, so a model learns to answer like a professional would. Mercor finds and screens those people, then puts them on paid projects as independent contractors.
What kind of work is it, and how much does it pay?
Work comes in projects that start and end, not as a permanent job. Typical tasks are writing and checking prompts, rating AI answers, and reviewing work in your own field. Mercor does not publish a rate card. Contractor reports and job listings put general work at roughly $15 to $40 an hour, with coding and specialist roles (medicine, law, finance) often listed far higher. Treat any figure as a range, not a promise: rates depend on the project and your field.
Can people in Ghana join Mercor?
Yes, according to Mercor's own list of supported countries, which includes Ghana and Nigeria (Kenya is listed as unsupported). Mercor says it cannot issue contracts in any location that is not on that list, so only work from where you actually live. Using a VPN or someone else's details to appear in another country can get your account closed and your pay withheld.
How does applying work?
- Create a profile on mercor.com and upload your CV.
- Take an AI-led interview about your background. Contractors describe it as around 20 minutes. Some roles add a skills assessment.
- If you are matched to a project, you sign a contract and start. Mercor requires its time-tracking tool, Insightful, which can take periodic screenshots while you work.
Read what to expect in the Mercor AI interview before you start.
What are the downsides?
- It is selective. Many applicants are never matched to a project.
- Work is not guaranteed. Projects end, and gaps between them are common.
- Some contractors complain on review sites about rates changing after they accepted a project. Read each contract carefully.
- Your screen is monitored while you track time.
How do you stay safe?
- Apply only through mercor.com (work happens on work.mercor.com). Mercor's support address is support@mercor.com.
- Never pay anyone for a Mercor job, training, a "slot" or equipment. Mercor says it never requests or requires any payment from talent.
- Real Mercor contact does not move you to a personal WhatsApp or Telegram chat. If someone does, check their number on TrustCheck and read how the fake Mercor recruiter scam works.
