Short answer: Remotasks, Scale AI's older AI training platform, shut down for workers in Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan in March 2024 and stopped new sign-ups in some other countries, according to reporting by Rest of World. Scale AI cited security reasons. Much of Scale's newer work now runs through its other platform, Outlier, which does not list Ghana. If someone offers you a "working Remotasks account" for a fee, it is a scam.
What happened in 2024?
Rest of World reported that, over about a month in early 2024, Remotasks shut down entirely in Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan, and halted new sign-ups in Thailand, Vietnam and Poland. Workers said they lost access with little warning. Scale AI said the changes were security measures and did not publish a full list of affected countries.
Is Remotasks still running?
Sources in 2026 disagree. Some say the site is still online but closed in several countries and pointing new sign-ups to Outlier. We found no official statement restoring access for West African countries. If you are in Ghana, do not build your plans around Remotasks.
What does this teach about AI training work?
- Platforms can drop whole countries quickly. Do not depend on one platform for all your income.
- Withdraw earnings regularly instead of letting a large balance build up.
- Keep your own records of tasks, hours and payments.
Which scams followed?
- "Verified Remotasks or Outlier accounts" for sale, registered in another country. You have no control over the account or the pay, and it breaks the rules.
- "Reactivation" agents who say they can restore a closed account for a fee.
- Fake training courses that promise a place on the platform after payment.
