Short answer: act within minutes. First call your MoMo provider or bank to try to stop the money, then report to the Cyber Security Authority (call or text 292, or WhatsApp 0501603111), then the police if the amount is large. Keep every screenshot and transaction ID.
Step 1: Stop the money
Call your MoMo provider's customer service or your bank immediately. Give the transaction ID, the number you paid and the time. The faster you call, the better the chance the money has not been withdrawn.
Step 2: Save the evidence
- Transaction ID and payment receipt.
- Screenshots of the chat, profile, page or website.
- The scammer's phone number, handle or web address.
Step 3: Report to the authorities
- Cyber Security Authority: call or text 292, or WhatsApp 0501603111.
- Police: for larger losses, make a report at a police station with your evidence.
- Loan app harassment: also report to the Bank of Ghana. See loan app scams.
Step 4: Warn others
Report the number, handle or website on TrustCheck. Our team checks it, and your report appears when someone checks that number. If it was a business, write a review too.
