What laptop does a university student in Ghana need?
For assignments, online classes, research and light design, look for:
- 8GB RAM. 4GB laptops are cheaper but slow down with a browser and Word open.
- An SSD, not an HDD. The very cheapest laptops in the shops often have a hard drive (HDD) and 4GB RAM. An SSD makes a bigger difference to speed than any other part.
- Intel Core i5 / Ryzen 5 or newer if you can afford it. Celeron and older i3 laptops are fine for typing but struggle with anything more.
- Battery life of 6 hours or more, which matters a lot during power cuts.
Engineering, architecture and computer science students who run heavy software should aim for 16GB RAM. Ask your department before you buy.
New or used: which is better value?
A used business laptop (for example an older ThinkPad or Dell Latitude) can give you more speed for the money, but only if you check it properly. Battery, charger, keyboard and screen faults are common, and some used laptops are stolen. Follow the used laptop checklist and compare with a new one on price check first.
How do I avoid laptop scams?
- Do not pay a deposit to a seller you have never met, however good the price.
- If a "brand new MacBook" on Instagram is far below every shop on price check, assume it is not brand new.
- Look the seller's number up on TrustCheck and read reviews before paying.
