Compare litres, horsepower or kilograms, not just the brand: a 48 litre bedside fridge and a 400 litre double door can both be called "LG fridge".

Which fridge size do I need?

• Under 100 litres: a bedside or office fridge for drinks.
• 150 to 250 litres: a couple or small family.
• 300 litres and above, or a fridge plus a chest freezer: a large family or anyone who buys meat and fish in bulk.

With frequent power cuts, look for a fridge or freezer that keeps cold for many hours when off, and use a voltage guard to protect the compressor.

What should I check before buying an air conditioner?

• Horsepower (HP). 1HP suits a small bedroom; 1.5HP a large bedroom or small hall; 2HP and above a living room.
• Inverter or not. Inverter ACs cost more but use less electricity, which matters with ECG tariffs.
• Installation. Ask whether installation, the copper pipe and the bracket are included. They often are not.

Twin-tub or automatic washing machine?

A twin-tub is usually the cheapest option and works with buckets when water flow is low. A front or top loader costs more but washes and spins in one go. If your water supply is irregular, a twin-tub is the safer choice.

How do I avoid appliance scams?
