Short answer: in Ghana it is illegal to run a private employment agency without a licence from the Ministry responsible for labour. Before you pay any agency for a job abroad, check its name on the Labour Department's official list, which you can search on TrustCheck's licence check with each licence's validity dates. If it is not there, do not pay.
How do you check an agency?
- Search the agency's registered name on TrustCheck's licence check. Our list comes from the Labour Department's Ghana Labour Market Information System and shows whether the agency recruits for jobs in Ghana or abroad, and when its licence runs out.
- Make sure the licence is for jobs abroad if that is what they are offering.
- If in doubt, call the Labour Department's toll-free line, 0800600300.
What are the signs of a fake "job abroad"?
- Fees before a real contract: "processing", "visa", "medical" or "ticket" fees paid by MoMo to a personal number.
- Guaranteed visas or jobs "without interview". Embassies decide visas, not agents.
- Nursing, caregiver, farm or driver jobs in Canada, the UK or the Gulf with very high pay and no checks of your qualifications.
- Recruitment only on WhatsApp or Telegram, with no office or registered company name.
- Pressure to pay today because "slots are almost full".
What should you do if you already paid?
- Call your MoMo provider or bank at once to try to block the payment.
- Report it to the Labour Department or the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, and to the police.
- Report the agent's number on TrustCheck so others are warned.
