Short answer: a list of 12 TraffiTech offences is going round with fines of about GH₵60 to GH₵600 and jail terms of up to 8 months. We checked it against the published summary of L.I. 2519 by the police Legal and Prosecution Unit, and 10 of the 12 match. But those ranges are the general penalties for each offence. For offences caught by cameras, the regulations set a fixed automated fine instead: GH₵120 for each of your first three offences, GH₵180 for the fourth and GH₵240 for the fifth. The amount on your own notice is the one that counts.

The 12 offences and their penalties
The list was shared online by Channel One TV on 2 November. The figures below are from that list, with what we found when we checked each one. One penalty unit is GH₵12 in these figures (10 units = GH₵120).
| # | Offence | Fine | Jail | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Speeding | GH₵120 to GH₵300 (10 to 25 units) | Up to 30 days, or both | Matches |
| 2 | Jumping a red light | GH₵120 to GH₵360 (10 to 30 units) | Up to 30 days, or both | Matches |
| 3 | Using a mobile phone while driving | Up to GH₵600 (up to 50 units) | Up to 3 months, or both | Matches |
| 4 | Not wearing a seat belt | GH₵120 to GH₵600 (10 to 50 units) | Up to 8 months, or both | Matches |
| 5 | Not stopping or giving way at a STOP or YIELD sign | GH₵120 to GH₵360 (10 to 30 units) | Up to 30 days, or both | Matches |
| 6 | Overtaking at a pedestrian crossing | GH₵120 to GH₵300 (10 to 25 units) | Or up to 30 days | Matches |
| 7 | Disobeying traffic signals, barriers or an officer's directions | GH₵120 to GH₵300 (10 to 25 units) | Or up to 30 days | Matches |
| 8 | Blocking an intersection or pedestrian crossing | GH₵120 to GH₵300 on the list | Up to 30 days on the list | Not in the summary we checked |
| 9 | Driving on the shoulder of the road | GH₵120 to GH₵300 on the list | Up to 30 days on the list | Summary covers parking on the hard shoulder (10 to 25 units) |
| 10 | No helmet or reflective clothing on a motorbike | GH₵300 to GH₵600 (25 to 50 units) | 1 to 3 months, or both | Matches |
| 11 | Railway crossings | GH₵60 to GH₵300 (5 to 25 units) | Or up to 30 days | Matches, for railway crossings |
| 12 | Stopping or parking in a place you are not allowed | GH₵120 to GH₵300 (10 to 25 units) | Or up to 30 days | Matches |
"Or both" means the court can give the fine, the jail term, or both together.
Two items we could not confirm
- Blocking an intersection or pedestrian crossing (the yellow box). This is not in the summary we checked. It may be in the full regulations, but we have not seen the figure in an official source.
- Driving on the shoulder. The summary we checked covers parking on a hard shoulder (10 to 25 penalty units or up to 30 days), not driving on it.
Treat those two figures with care until the police publish them.
Camera fines are different: the GH₵120 rule
Regulation 242 of L.I. 2519 says offences caught by traffic enforcement devices, including cameras, attract graduated automated fines:
- 1st, 2nd and 3rd offence: GH₵120 each (10 penalty units)
- 4th offence: GH₵180 (15 penalty units)
- 5th offence: GH₵240 (20 penalty units)
- 6th offence within 24 months: the court can suspend or revoke your licence for at least 12 months, with retraining and retesting.
So a camera ticket should not be GH₵600 or come with a jail term on the text. The ranges in the table matter when an offence is taken to court.
Drivers have already noticed amounts that do not fit. One driver's first speeding ticket this week showed GH₵240, and people asked why it was not GH₵120. The police page says the fines are set in the Ninth and Thirteenth Schedules of L.I. 2519 but does not list them. If the amount on your notice looks wrong, check it on the official portal and contest it within 14 days. Paying ends the contest.
Which of these can a camera catch?
TraffiTech-GH started on 1 November 2026 with speeding. The regulations allow automated fines for any offence caught by an enforcement device, so more of the offences above may follow. See TraffiTech-GH speed cameras explained and the camera locations in Accra.
How to pay a real fine
- Type traffitech-ghpay.nib.com.gh or www.ghana.gov.gh yourself and enter your ticket number, or dial *222# and choose 6. GPS/MTTD.
- You have 14 days. After that, 1% of the fine is added for each day you are late, and unpaid fines block DVLA services.

Do not pay a fake fine
Real notices come only from the sender ID GPS-MTTD. Since 2 November, fake texts saying "Official Traffic Message: Your vehicle has a recorded traffic violation" have come from ordinary numbers with a short d1.mk link. Do not open them. See how to spot a fake TraffiTech-GH fine text.
